This free form cut Fire Agate cabochon measures 9.5 x 7.5 x 4 mm, weighs 3.9 carats, and has a nice green and blue multi-colored fire display. It requires good lighting conditions for best fire display. This polished gemstone is ready for final jewelry setting or gemstone collection display. Photographs were taken indoors under lights and outdoors in sunlight while the gem was dry and to best display the internal fire. Gem Grade: B

This fire agate gemstone originates from the Calvillo Fire Agate (Agata De Fuego as it is called in Spanish) mines in the Mexican State of Aguascalientes. These mines are well known for producing quality fire agate gemstones with mixed color variations from reds, greens, purples and blues.

The colors found within fire agates are created by the Schiller effect, as found in mother-of-pearl and opals. It is caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers which diffract and allow light to pass which forms the interference of colors known as fire. This play of color requires good lighting for best fire display and many of the gems will appear darker and/or brown colored in low light conditions.

Grading: Fire Agate US gem grades are based off of a weighted point system. This system includes these factors: Color (# colors represented, % of respective colors, color tone), Cut (quality of craftsmanship, polish/finish, overall shape and usability of stone, % of stone surface with fire display), Refraction (strength, how much light it takes to 'fire up', brightness, intensity of reflection), Aspect (how well the fire displays from different viewing aspects), Size (weight factor, very large quality gems are scarcer), Unique Factors (sagenite sprays, inclusions), Flaws (cracks, brownouts, % of extinction or areas of no reflection). Available grades are D, DD, DDD, C, CC, CCC, B, BB, BBB, A, AA, AAA.
