This free form cut Fire Agate cabochon measures 16 x 14 x 5 mm, weighs 13.1 carats, and has a nice green, orange, gold and blue colored fire. This highly polished gemstone requires good lighting conditions for best fire display and is ready for final jewelry setting, or would make for a good addition to a gemstone or mineral collection. Photographs were taken indoors under lights and outdoors in sunlight while the gem was dry and to best display the internal fire. Note: Gem has curved bottom (see depth photo). Gem Grade: BB

This fire agate gemstone originates from the Calvillo Fire Agate (Agata De Fuego as they are called in Spanish) mines in the Mexican State of Aguascalientes. These mines are well known for producing quality fire agate gemstones with mixed color variations from reds, greens, purples and blues.

The colors found within fire agates are created by the Schiller effect, as found in mother-of-pearl and opals. It is caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers which diffract and allow light to pass which forms the interference of colors known as fire. This play of color requires good lighting for best fire display and will appear darker in low light conditions.

Grading: Fire Agate US gem grades are based off of a weighted point system. This system includes these factors: Color (# colors represented, color tone, fire type), Cut (quality of craftsmanship, polish/finish, overall shape and usability of stone, % of stone surface with fire display), Refraction (how much light it takes to 'fire up', brightness), Aspect (how well the fire displays from different viewing aspects), Size (weight factor, very large quality gems are scarcer), Unique Factors (sagenite sprays, inclusions), Flaws (cracks, areas of no fire). Available grades are D, DD, DDD, C, CC, CCC, B, BB, BBB, A, AA, AAA.
