This free form cut Deer Creek fire agate cabochon has an interesting combination of two distinct fire colors, a green bubble fire display on one side and a metallic red, orange, gold and green colored fire display on the other side. This colorful and unique fire agate gemstone weighs 6.3 carats, measures 18 x 13 x 2 mm, and has a mixture of green, orange, red and gold fire colors.
This fire agate gemstone refracts well in most good lighting conditions and has a flat bottom which displays some green and orange pinfire on one end of the stone. This polished gemstone is ready for final jewelry setting or gemstone display. There appears to be a nice green fire layer under the red/orange/gold layer so this stone could likely be recut to make it an all green gemstone.
This stone originates from Deer Creek, Arizona, known for quality fire agate gemstones that often display vivid color variations. Photographs were taken indoors under lights and outdoors in sunlight while the gem was dry and to best display the internal fire.
The colors found within fire agates are created by the Schiller effect, as found in mother-of-pearl and opals. It is caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers which diffract and allow light to pass which forms the interference of colors known as fire. This play of color requires good lighting for best fire display and gems will appear darker in lower lighting conditions.
