This quality piece of Slaughter Mountain Fire Agate rough measures approx. 1-1/2 inches x 1-1/4 inches x 7/8 inch (39x32x22 mm) and weighs 31.42 grams (157.1 carats). This piece of fire agate gemstone rough has been trimmed of excess material, partially contoured cut to just above the initial surface fire layer, roughly polished to help display the internal colors, and upon examination with a 20x jeweler’s loupe it shows multiple layers of fiery red, orange, green and some blue/purple colors.
This preform has great gemstone carving possibilities for a talented freeform fire agate gemstone carver. There is a possibility of getting two larger sized gems out of this piece due to the deep multi-layer stacking of the fire layers which is common with Slaughter Mountain material, however a precision cut would need to be made to slice the piece in half (top/bottom). At a minimum, a decent sized 26 mm x 22 mm finished gem with a thickness as desired should be possible with this piece.

Photographs were taken indoors under lights and outdoors in sunlight while the stone was dry and then also wet to simulate a polish to best display the internal fire.
The colors found within fire agates are created by the Schiller effect, as found in mother-of-pearl and opals. It is caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers which diffract and allow light to pass which forms the interference of colors known as fire. This play of color requires good lighting for best fire display and the gems will appear darker in lower lighting conditions.
This stone is a 100% natural rock and may be subject to normal flaws as found in nature or the result of hard-rock mining extraction (cracks, chips, etc).
